Tummy Tuck: The Pros and Cons of Surgery

A tummy tuck can help improve the appearance of your stomach and create a slimmer waistline. However, as a tummy tuck is a major operation, it’s important to know the benefits and factors you need to consider before deciding whether this type of surgery is right for you.

What is tummy tuck surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure which removes loose skin and excess fat from your abdomen and tightens stomach muscles to create a more toned tummy.

A tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and involves creating an incision along the lower abdomen from one hip to another. The surgeon will then remove excess fat and skin from the area, and repair and tighten the abdominal muscles.

Some people choose to have a mini tummy tuck, also referred to as an apronectomy. A mini tummy tuck primarily involves removing the excess skin hanging over the pubic area. Although the procedure is similar to a regular tummy tuck, the recovery time is usually much shorter.

What are the benefits of tummy tuck surgery?

Flatter stomach

As the procedure involves removing excess fat and skin from the abdominal area, the result is a flatter and firmer stomach.

Contoured abdominal area

Sometimes abdominal muscles can separate due to pregnancy or become weak over time due to ageing, injury, or inactivity. Tummy tuck surgery repairs and tightens abdominal muscles, which will also help them appear more defined.

Better posture

As the procedure helps tighten abdominal muscles, you may notice your posture improves as the repaired abdominal muscles can better support your spine.

Improved appearance

A tummy tuck can help reduce or eradicate stretch marks or general skin imperfections around the abdomen to help the skin appear smoother.

Enhanced confidence

For many, having excess skin around their tummy can affect their confidence and lead to low self-esteem. Undergoing tummy tuck surgery can help improve the appearance of your waistline, which can help boost your confidence.

What factors do I need to consider before having a tummy tuck?

Potential risks

As with any surgical operation, a tummy tuck carries various risks and complications, such as the risk of infection, poor wound healing, and blood clots. Your medical professional will discuss these in more detail so you are fully aware of the potential complications.

Recovery time

For the first couple of weeks following tummy tuck surgery, you will feel quite sore, and need to take some time off work. You won’t be able to do some of the things you usually do, such as drive, stand up straight or lay down flat. You will have to wear a compression garment and be unable to undertake strenuous activities for at least six weeks.

Full recovery from a tummy tuck can take between four and eight weeks.

Post-operate swelling, bruising, and scarring

You will have some swelling and bruising following surgery, which is completely normal and will go down on its own in time. Resting during the first two weeks after surgery, staying hydrated and wearing your compression garment can all help to reduce the inflammation.

Following a tummy tuck, you will also have a scar on your lower abdomen from the incision, but don’t worry, this will usually be hidden by your underwear and fades over time.

Financial investment

As with any cosmetic surgery, undergoing a tummy tuck can be a significant investment. At Ramsay Health Care, we discuss the cost of surgery with you during your initial consultation and offer a range of finance options so you can pay in a way that suits you.

It’s not a replacement for weight loss surgery

A tummy tuck procedure will remove excess skin and fat from your abdomen to improve the appearance of your stomach, however, it is not a type of weight loss surgery.

The results of tummy tuck surgery are also not guaranteed to last. Maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle can help, but fluctuations in weight and the general ageing process may affect the appearance of your stomach over time.
