Review, follow up and support

Weight Loss Services

Supporting you throughout your weight loss journey

You will be invited for regular follow up appointments that will help you keep motivated and provide a forum to air your feelings and concerns. Our bariatric team are there to support you throughout your weight loss journey.

Two to six weeks after your gastric bypass surgery you’ll have your post-operative review with your bariatric surgeon. During the first year you’ll see your surgeon several more times. You’ll also have monthly review appointments with our multi-disciplinary team for the duration of your aftercare to help keep you on the right road to achieving your goals whilst monitoring your weight loss success and assessing any further needs for support.

We monitor weight loss by looking at your body fat percentage, your proportion of body water and fat free mass (e.g. bones, muscle). By regularly observing this data we monitor your weight loss in a meaningful way. For example, controlling your food intake and exercising may cause your muscle mass to increase yet as muscle weighs more than fat this may show in the form of a slow weight loss when in fact you are maintaining an excellent diet and lifestyle that should be commended.

It is important that you keep focused and remain committed to following your new diet at all times. Once you have lost the initial weight you can review your lifestyle and look to become more active and healthier all round.

We recommend that you keep a diary of your diet and weight so that you can track any foods that don’t agree with you whilst also monitoring your own weight loss. This will hopefully keep you motivated and allow you to celebrate your achievements.

Support and contact numbers

As a gastric bypass patient you are welcome to join one of our regular support groups. These support groups are available both pre and post operatively to all our weight loss patients where we will provide evidence-based behaviour modification advice.

Our support groups offer patients a forum to discuss stories, difficulties, tips and concerns in a mutually supportive environment. You will have the opportunity to meet others who are going through a similar weight loss journey who understand and are experiencing many of the things you are feeling. You may develop friendships within this network.

Regular weight loss surgery support group participation has been found to lead to more weight loss.

Keeping to your weight loss diet plan can be stressful for you, your partner or family. If at any time you are finding it difficult to cope then please call the bariatric team. You may also benefit from talking to family, friends, a special confidant or a professional such as a psychologist or counsellor.

Cosmetic Surgery after Gastric Bypass Surgery

Residual skin folds following dramatic weight loss after gastric bypass surgery can be upsetting to live with from a cosmetic angle as well as from a hygiene perspective because the folds can develop rashes or become infected. Unfortunately the skin does not revert back to the firmness and shape it was prior to you becoming overweight.

Cosmetic surgery is sometimes considered to remove the excess skin. We recommend that you wait until you have reached your weight loss goal and your weight has stabilised before considering cosmetic surgery.

We’re a leading provider of cosmetic surgery in the UK. If you want to discuss cosmetic surgery options in more detail then we’d be more than happy to discuss it further with you.
