Mr Rix offers subspecialist treatment for stones including laser fragmentation, shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for larger, complex cases.

He has developed particular expertise in surgery for enlarged prostates, including HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate), proven to be more effective than traditional prostate operations. He is one of a group of mentors teaching the procedure to other surgeons throughout the UK and abroad.

Mr Rix is also one of the Colchester cancer surgeons, diagnosing and treating prostate cancer, bladder cancer, testicular cancer and kidney cancer. He specialises in complex renal surgery, including radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and laparoscopic (keyhole) nephrectomy.

He sees female patients with general urological problems requiring both medical and surgical management.

Academic background

Mr Rix began his medical career at Oxford University, obtaining a degree in Physiological Science. He completed his medical training at Addenbrookes Hospital and Cambridge University, graduating in 1991. He began his surgical career in East Anglia before being accepted onto the Edinburgh urology rotation, from which he graduated as a Urological Surgeon in 2004. He returned to South East England on his consultant appointment to Colchester.

Mr Rix is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and the European Association of Urologists.
