Mr Mitchell passionately believes in what colorectal surgery can offer patients. It can be an embarrassing and difficult subject to talk about and his aim is to put patients at ease throughout their investigation and treatment. The vast majority of patients he sees have a condition which can be treated or managed and one of the most common things he hears is ‘I’m glad I got referred’.

Academic background

Mr Mitchell specialises in all aspects of colorectal surgery and also treats patients with general surgery conditions such as hernias and ‘lumps and bumps’.

On average he performs 30 major elective resections per year and the National Clinical Outcomes Publication for 2019 will highlight he has undertaken the highest number of these operations (of colorectal surgeons in this region) over the last 5 years.

Mr David Mitchell is originally from Aberdeen and trained at the University of Edinburgh where he also completed his early years of practice. He has been fortunate to train in centres of excellence throughout the UK including Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge and his registrar training at John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. His Fellowship was at the internationally regarded Peritoneal Malignancy Unit in Basingstoke.

Mr Mitchell was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in August 2012 where he currently practices.

This training has allowed him to hold the position of Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Surgical Tutor at the University of Oxford where he also was awarded a higher education teaching Diploma. The teaching and training of future generations of doctors and surgeons is of great importance to him.
