Clinical interests

Dr Harkness specialises in coronary artery disease, heart failure and valve disease through advanced cardiac imaging with CT and echocardiography.

Cardiac conditions he has a particular interest in include chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, blackouts, murmurs, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

He is a BSCI accredited expert in CT coronary angiography – the first-line investigation for angina according to NICE. He has a specialist interest in the radial approach to invasive coronary angiography using dedicated catheters.

Dr Harkness has BSE accreditation in both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, tests used to diagnose heart failure, valve disease and angina.

He investigates palpitations and blackouts with ECG monitoring including the use of the ZIO patch and implantable loop recorders such as the Medtronic Reveal and LINQ. He regularly implants pacemakers and implanted the first MRI compatible device in Essex.

The Oaks Hospital provides access to CT scanning of the Coronary Arteries to assess patients with chest discomfort or to evaluate patients cardiac risk.

Academic background

Dr Harkness qualified from Glasgow University in 1994. His research was in heart failure and he helped pilot the first community nurse liaison service in heart failure. He worked closely with the British Heart Foundation to develop this into the national standard for heart failure care.

After attaining dual accreditation in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine, he was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Colchester Hospital in 2006 and became the Clinical Lead in Cardiology in 2010. He introduced new techniques to Colchester such as CT angiography and advanced echo, including 3D and stress echo.

Dr Harkness has worked for many years in the education committee of the British Society of Echocardiography and has co-authored several national guidelines on echocardiography.

In 2017, he completed an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and became Clinical Director for Medicine. He works closely with Ipswich Hospital to develop services across the region.

Professional Memberships

He is a founder member of The British Society for Heart Failure. He also holds membership of the British Cardiovascular Society, British Heart Valve Society, British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging and American Society of Echocardiography.

He is honoured to be a Fellow of both The Royal College of Physicians (London) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
